Garda Ombudsman investigating Bailey complaint | BreakingNews.ie

Garda Ombudsman investigating Bailey complaint | BreakingNews.ie: "His complaint focuses on recently released documents which included a 44-page critical review of the conduct of the murder investigation and the reasons why the former director of public prosecutions (DPP) decided not to prosecute.

The Department of Justice said once the existence of the 2001 review was brought to the attention of the Attorney General, Marie Whelan, and Justice Minister Alan Shatter, the documents were given to the solicitors and counsel representing all sides in the extradition proceedings, including the French authorities.

The material also questioned the credibility of several key witnesses and alleged an unnamed senior garda or gardaí tried to get the former state solicitor for West Cork to put political pressure on the DPP to prosecute Mr Bailey.

Former DPP Eamon Barnes described the Garda investigation into the murder of Ms Toscan du Plantier as flawed and "prejudiced," and the attempt by gardaí to get a direction from the DPP’s office to prosecute as grossly improper."?

Boohig told Barnes that he had attended a meeting with three senior gardai about the Toscan Du Plantier murder. The gardai outlined the pressure they were under to secure a charge in the murder investigation. After the meeting, one of the gardai followed Boohig out of the room. He asked Boohig if he had been at school with John O'Donoghue, then Justice Minister. He then asked the solicitor to ask the minister to use his influence to help secure a prosecution. Boohig contacted Barnes to let him know about this approach and he later went to Dublin to discuss it with Barnes in person."?

Later this month, the United Nations Committee against Torture will examine Ireland for the first time on the extent to which it is meeting its human rights obligations under the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT). Justice for Magdalenes (JFM) has taken the opportunity to submit an NGO report to the Committee against Torture on the lack of redress for women who were incarcerated and forced into unpaid labour in Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries, as we wait for the government’s response to the Irish Human Rights Commission’s Recommendation from November 2010 to immediately establish a statutory inquiry into the Magdalene Laundries abuse and ensure redress as appropriate"?

Magdalene group urges action - The Irish Times - Thu, May 24, 2012: "Lawyer Maeve O’Rourke said that next Monday JFM was planning to meet Felice Gaer, vice President of the United Nations Committee on Torture (UNCAT), in Dublin.

They would advise her that, despite UNCAT recommendations last year where the Magdalene Laundries were concerned, there had still been no apology to survivors of the Laundries, no redress and no independent investigation into the full facts of abuse in the Laundries.

Ms O’Rourke, who presented the JFM case to UNCAT in Geneva last year which led to the Committee making those recommendations, acknowledged that the Government had set up the inter-departmental committee under the chairmanship of Senator Martin McAleese to inquire into the Laundries.

But, she said, “it is still our case that the women are still no closer to redress or an apology – and that they cannot afford to wait any longer.”"?

In final interview, Cardinal says Church “200 years out of date” | Preda Foundation, Inc.

In final interview, Cardinal says Church “200 years out of date” | Preda Foundation, Inc.: The former archbishop of Milan and papal candidate Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini said the Catholic Church was “200 years out of date” in his final interview before his death, published on Saturday.

Martini, once favored by Vatican progressives to succeed Pope John Paul II and a prominent voice in the church until his death at the age of 85 on Friday, gave a scathing portrayal of a pompous and bureaucratic church failing to move with the times.

“Our culture has aged, our churches are big and empty and the church bureaucracy rises up, our rituals and our cassocks are pompous,” Martini said in the interview published in Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

“The Church must admit its mistakes and begin a radical change, starting from the pope and the bishops. The pedophilia scandals oblige us to take a journey of transformation,” he said in the interview.?

Revealed: the pay and perks of your local councillors - National News - Independent.ie: THE country’s 883 city and county councillors benefited from a €28m payments’ windfall last year.
An Irish Independent investigation reveals that our part-time politicians were paid an average of €31,600 each in salary, allowances, expenses and fees for sitting on a range of public bodies. Many of these councillors earned this cash on top of their day jobs.
However, others have made a full-time living out of what is supposed to be a part-time role. A major trawl of financial records held by almost 200 public bodies revealed very high – but legitimate – pay and expense packages claimed by some councillors.
The highest-earning councillor in the country received seven payments totalling €83,000 from five different bodies – his county council and four outside bodies, to which he was nominated by virtue of being a county councillor.?

Dáil Eireann - 29/Jun/1960 Criminal Justice Bill, 1960—Second Stage (Resumed).: There are few Deputies who are not personally, or at least vicariously, familiar with the insides of prisons. Many of our colleagues have been inside as prisoners. Some of us have heard at second hand of conditions within prisons. Others of us accepted the prudent discipline of visiting the prisons when we became legislators so that we might have a clear knowledge of what we were doing if we legislated in such a way as to make it possible to imprison our neighbour. I visited all the prisons in this country, Borstal, the reformatories and some of the industrial schools. One has always to bear in mind that, for anybody entering a penal institution of any kind for the first time, there is always the possibility that he may experience a certain feeling of shock. But, having recovered from that, it is, I think, the duty of all legislators to attempt at least to take an objective and a charitable view of the circumstances of people upon whom the misfortune of imprisonment has fallen.?
